Active fire at James Smith Cree Nation leads to evacuation

May 3, 2025 | 6:51 PM

A fire has evacuated a number of people from the James Smith Cree Nation (JSCN).

A post on JSCN’s social media page indicated that some members of the community “are being evacuated for their safety.”

Anyone affected by the evacuation is being asked to congregate at Bernard Constant Community School (BCCS) gym, which is the designated evacuation site.

The post indicated that food and water are on the way, and other supports and planning for those who have been displaced will be coordinated from the gym.

“Please stay safe, look out for one another, and continue to watch for updates,” the post said. “Our thoughts are with everyone impacted during this difficult time.”

The blaze, currently labelled as JSIR01, is not contained, according to the provincial government’s wildfire map.

Hot, dry, windy conditions are expected to continue through the day on Sunday, with highs around 30 C. However, there is a possibility of rain Sunday night into Monday, with temperatures cooling significantly, with the low Sunday night around 7 C and Monday’s high only forecast at 16 C.
