Timberjaks welcome new foe as PJHL expands in the south

The Prince Albert Timberjaks are no longer the new guys in the Prairie Junior Hockey League (PJHL).

An exciting announcement was made during the league’s annual general meeting (AGM) last weekend where they welcomed the Moosomin Steelhawks as the newest addition to the league. The Steelhawks are the 12th team to join the PJHL, following the addition of the Timberjaks in 2023.

Prince Albert’s Head Coach and General Manager Steph Corfmat said he’s happy to see the league gain another member.

“It’s good that it’s expanding because it is a pretty good league, and it gives another 20 kids the chance to play junior instead of playing senior or quitting altogether.”

The addition of Moosomin in the Bill Johnston (South) Division evens out the playing field as there are now six teams in either the south and Bob Dybvig (North) Divisions.

The even number of teams also shakes up the schedule a bit, as clubs will play more games against opponents in their own division. Previously, teams would play three games against interdivisional foes, but now with an even number of teams, clubs will only play two interdivision games starting next season.

Playoffs will also see a change in how it’s played, however, the new structure has yet to be announced.

Corfmat said he hopes to see the league keep expanding and added he’s looking forward to making the one and only trip to Moosomin at some point in the season.

“It’ll be fun going to a new environment, it’s a weekend getting the guys away from here too, right?” He laughed. “Hotel and everything will be fun for the guys, too.”

Moosomin is the furthest place Prince Albert will travel to next season at 536 km away, or a roughly five-and-a-half-hour bus ride. The Steelhawks will play out of the Mike Schwean Arena, which they’ll share with the Moosomin Sr. Rangers and the Rangers minor hockey teams.

The Timberjaks will also visit Martensville for the first time this coming season following the relocation of the Delisle Chiefs, who moved due to a lack of community support.
