Ammonia issue causes precautionary shut down of new ice arena

May 6, 2025 | 2:33 PM

Skaters at Prince Albert’s new twin pad hockey arena had to leave the ice Monday evening as a precaution after an issue in the ice plant room.

Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture, Jody Boulet, said that the building is designed with safety in mind.

“I can confirm that an ammonia alarm was detected late last evening. The building is designed to contain these incidents to the Ice Plant Room. The staff responded to the alarm and it was decided to evacuate the building as a precautionary measure until the severity of the incident could be confirmed,” said Boulet.

He thanked staff for following the correct protocols and said all operations returned to normal this morning.

Boulet said such incidents are rare and their investigation showed that the cause was not a symptom of a bigger issue.

“All appropriate measures have been taken and the public was welcomed back into the facility this morning to resume the regularly scheduled programming,” he said.
