Beavers ready to open season with eyes set on three-peat

With the crack of bats and pop of mitts filling the spring air, the North Battleford Beavers are ready to get back on the diamond, preparing for what is hopefully another successful season.

Coming off back-to-back North Saskatchewan River Baseball League (NSRBL) championships, the team is now just under a week away from their season opener and journey towards a chance at a three-peat.

Beavers coach and player, Kyle Gregoire said there is a lot of promise for the upcoming season.

“We’re looking forward to having another good season. We have most of the returning guys, and then we have a couple of guys coming up from the U18 AA as well as some other players, so hopefully they can bring in some young fresh blood to the team and help us to another championship. Obviously, we can’t guarantee anything this upcoming season, but I think we will have a really good year,” he said.

Of the new players coming to the team, one of the biggest names is Battlefords local Caleb Hoiseth. Hoiseth is a right-handed pitcher who played for the U18 AA Beavers last season and won the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League AA (SPBL-AA) Top Pitcher award. He now plays at Valley City State University in North Dakota and is expected to be a good addition to the Beavers.

“Caleb is a really amazing pitcher, a good out fielding fielder and has a really good bat too, we are excited to have him on the team” said Gregoire.

However, even though the Beavers are seeing a good return of players and are coming off a championship, they aren’t expecting anything to come easy.

Going into their first game, Gregoire said they need to play to their strengths if they want to see success.

“We are in a competitive league and there is never going to be a team that you can walk over by any means. I think having a balance of good offense and at the same time helping our pitchers with some good defense and then our pitching depth that we have is definitely a strength of ours too, but we can’t be too confident going into the first game,” Gregoire said.

The Beavers open the season on Monday, May 12 against the Mervin Flyers, 7:30 p.m. at Beaver Lions Stadium.
