Residents of the Harlan Road area on Onion Lake Cree Nation are currently on evacuation standby due to a wildfire in the area.

The fire started around 6:00 p.m. on May 4 and due to dry weather conditions has since grown to 1,400 hectares according to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA).

Fire crews have been fighting the blaze day and night since it started and Onion Lake fire fighter and dispatcher, Thomas Davidson said the fire is almost fully contained.

“The fire is about 90 per cent contained, we’re still working on a few little areas here and there, but the wind is really affecting it,” he said.

Environment Canada had winds gusting up to 70 kilometres per hour in the forecast for Wednesday.

There have been no reported injuries as well as no homes or structures damaged. Despite the area only being on evacuation standby, some residents have decided to leave the area on their own.

Residents have also been asked to stay off the roads in the area as emergency vehicles are using them.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) confirmed they are actively engaged in suppressing the Onion Lake fire (OLIR01) by providing Type 1 and Type 2 ground crews, an Emergency Response Team and additional SPSA support staff, heavy equipment, and air support.

The SPSA has not been requested to support the evacuation of residents of Onion Lake.

For emergency assistance, residents are asked to call 306-344-4444
