Sentencing decision reserved for man involved in flight from RCMP

Within weeks of being released from jail and while on probation, a man was in a stolen vehicle where there was a gun present.

Those were among the details shared when 44-year-old Curtis Ledoux appeared Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court. In relation to the events that occurred last August at Sturgeon Lake First Nation, guilty pleas were entered to resisting arrest, possession of a prohibited firearm and breach of probation.

The case had initially been scheduled for trial.

On the day of the incident, Prince Albert RCMP were notified of a vehicle driving at high speeds.

After officers found the vehicle, they tried to stop it, but the driver refused and fled. Roughly two hours later, police found the suspect vehicle again and tried to stop it, but the driver fled a second time. However, they ran into mechanical issues and were forced to stop. Through their investigation, police learned the vehicle had been stolen out of Weirdale.

One of the people inside the vehicle discharged a gun at police, and the two occupants then ran on foot. Officers later located an illegally modified shotgun inside the vehicle.

The Critical Incident Response Team, police dog, Prince Albert Crime Reduction team and the Warrant Enforcement team all arrived on scene and deployed a drone to search for the suspects in the rural area.

Ledoux was located hiding in a bush and was arrested. During the arrest, he was bitten on the arm by a canine officer and treated at a local hospital.

The second occupant, Ethan Felix, was not immediately found but was later arrested and eventually sentenced to six years in prison.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

Crown Prosecutor Kristen Hubbard, who is seeking a four-year sentence for Ledoux, acknowledged the fact that he was not the shooter, but added his criminal record, which includes over 14 convictions for violence, is still very serious. He’s also had several convictions for flight from police and resisting arrest.

“He’s obviously been in that situation before,” she said, adding that a significant sentence is needed.

Prior to the incident at Sturgeon Lake First Nation, Ledoux had served an eight-month sentence for accessory after the fact. This was related to the death of Wesley Custer in August 2020.

In turn, Defence lawyer Andrew Clements is seeking a time served sentence, which would take into account 392 days of pre-sentence custody.

Clements noted Ledoux was a passenger and had cooperated with police. Ledoux stated he had gotten a ride from Felix. He also expressed a feeling of being surprised when Felix fired the gun.

Admitting to using cocaine and alcohol, Ledoux said he ran because he wasn’t thinking straight.

During his time in custody, Ledoux has been working with Str8 Up, an organization that helps remove individuals from the gang lifestyle.

Stating he needs time to consider what was said, Judge Harradence reserved his sentencing decision to May 23.
