Busy times for the Melfort Fire Department after bale fire, grass fire

May 8, 2025 | 10:29 AM

A busy couple of weeks for the Melfort Fire Department (MFD), thanks to the warm, windy weather.

Crews were called out to a stubble fire east of Star City late Wednesday morning.

A pile of bales was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived, and it was threatening a nearby farmyard, a creek, and a large herd of cattle within the enclosure.

The MFD said the gusting wind proved problematic throughout the call, and crews from Melfort and Tisdale, and helpers from the Star City Colony, helped contain the blaze.

The scene was turned over to the Tisdale Fire Department when the Melfort crews were called to another call.

The department was called to a false carbon monoxide alarm on Burrows Ave. W. in Melfort just after 2 pm.

Two hours later, the MFD responded to a fire caused by the strong wind.

A tree was blown over and fell onto a power line, igniting the grass and bush around it.

A large area of burnt grass and bush was found when crews arrived, and they attacked the perimeter of the blaze until SaskPower arrived to kill the power to the downed line.

Crews then called in heavy machinery to help create a fire perimeter around the burning area due to the difficult access to the fire, and the size of the blaze.

In all, the department was sent to four separate calls Wednesday, including an early morning crash near the city.
