Semi-final Rematch

Mustangs begin Centennial Cup run against host Calgary

May 8, 2025 | 2:10 PM

May 18, 2024, the Melfort Mustangs defeated the Calgary Canucks 2-1 in the national semi-final game at the 2024 Centennial Cup in Oakville, Ont.

Fast forward to May 8, 2025, and the Mustangs are now in Calgary for the 2025 Centennial Cup, where they will begin their tournament at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against those same Canucks, who are now the host team.

“We’re super pumped, obviously, it’s super exciting for us to be in this position again, and to be able to play through May, not many people are still playing at this time, so the boys will be excited,” explained captain Ty Thornton.

“They’re not gonna take us lightly, for sure, especially with what we did to them last year, so we’re definitely looking for a little bit of a revenge story, but we’re not gonna let that happen.”

Tonight’s contest marks the first of four guaranteed games for each of the ten teams that are split into two pools of five.

The top three on each side will advance to the playoff round next weekend, with the top seed in either pool advancing straight to the semi-finals.

“The first game is definitely key, we want to start off well because it’s such a quick tournament, so there’s not really room for error. We had a good practice yesterday and got our feet underneath us and got the bus legs out. Tonight is gonna be a big game for us, especially being against the host team, so hopefully, we can take it to them,” Thornton added.

“We’ve done a little bit of film on them and went over their systems and stuff this past week, so I think we’re gonna be ready for them… we know who we are and how we want to play, so we’re not gonna stray away from that. We know how good we are when we’re at our best, so our guys are gonna bring it and we’re gonna just stick to our identity.”

Puckdrop from the Max Bell Centre in Calgary, Alta., is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (Saskatchewan and Alberta time), with the pregame show beginning at 7:10 p.m. on 105 CJVR.
