Mustangs’ Unger ready to suit up against former team

May 8, 2025 | 5:00 PM

Two years ago, current Melfort Mustangs defenceman Cole Unger was a member of the Calgary Canucks.

It was where the Medicine Hat, Alta. native began his Junior A hockey career as a 17-year-old.

Now a 19-year-old, soon to be 20 (his birthday is May 11) and two-time SJHL Champion, Unger will face his former squad in the barn he used to call home to begin his and Melfort’s 2025 Centennial Cup run.

“It feels a little weird to be back, it’s been a long time since I last played here, but it’s a good rink and I enjoyed my time here… I think this place is like any other rink, you just have to bring your A game and play your best to win,” Unger said.

“I would say to the boys, just make sure that you don’t put yourself in a bad spot because the boards here are pretty high.”

While just two players remain on the team from the time when Unger donned the red and yellow jersey, there are a lot of staff members who remain the same. Unger added he hopes to reconnect with a few while he’s here, hopefully, following a Mustangs’ victory.

“They definitely want to come back and win to get some revenge from last year, so we’re going to have to throw everything at them and show them what we’ve got.”

Unger and the Blue and Green will battle his former club Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.

In his lone season in Calgary (2022/23), Unger suited up 38 times for the Canucks, posting a goal and seven assists.
