The hometown hero: Zac Somers player profile

May 8, 2025 | 7:30 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are back at the Centennial Cup, which means their eight 2004-born players only have two weeks left in their junior hockey careers.

The hope is that it will be their best and most memorable times of their lives.

In the case of forward Zac Somers, you could argue the last four years have been the best and most memorable time of his life, as he’s been able to suit up for his hometown club.

“Obviously, it’s awesome to be able to win a championship in my last game in Melfort, most guys don’t even get the opportunity to play in their hometown, so to be able to do that for four years and end it with back-to-back championships is something I’ll never forget,” Somers told northeastNOW.

“I never could’ve imagined that this would be my junior career, you can’t really expect stuff like this or anything even close to it, so I’m just super grateful for it.”

The lone downside in his long career with the Blue and Green was this time last year.

During the entirety of the 2024 Centennial Cup in Oakville, Ont. Somers was there, but he was unable to play due to injury.

“Last year, we came up a little short, so I think there’s some unfinished business there, and we’re looking for a better result this year,” he added.

“It was tough last year, watching the boys go to battle and not being able to join them, but this year, I’m back, healthy and looking to get it done… obviously, that experience comes in for our team, which is huge. Not many guys or teams here have had the experience, so it’s huge to bring that in here.”

In 199 games and counting in a Stangs uniform, the hometown hero has amassed an impressive 177 points.

And while his time playing in his hometown rink has passed, he’s trying not to think about it too much, but rather focus on the moments ahead in Calgary.

“The Palace is the hometown barn, so I haven’t quite gotten to thinking about not playing there anymore. It’s definitely going to take some getting used to, the time there was obviously great, but we’re looking to move on from that and focus on winning here in Calgary,” Somers concluded.
