Work on $28 million highway project begins near La Ronge

A $28 million enhancement project that was slated to begin in 2024 finally commenced earlier this week.

Work to reinforce the subgrade beneath the road’s surface on Highway 102 began on Wednesday near Sucker River. The project calls for 25 kilometres of roadway to be redone between that community and La Ronge by the end of 2025.

Highway 102 was named Saskatchewan’s seventh-worst roadway by CAA on Tuesday.

“Installation of culverts for the project began in March 2025, was paused due to the spring melt, and resumed … May 7,” an email to larongeNOW by the Ministry of Highways stated.

“The culvert installations are expected to be completed later this summer, pending weather.”

As this work occurs, motorists are reminded to slow down, obey all signage in work zones, expect one-way traffic and be prepared to stop.

“The Ministry of Highways appreciates the patience and understanding of all motorists as this work occurs to improve the Saskatchewan transportation system to support our quality of life and export-based economy,” the email added.

Construction of a $15.8 million bridge in Air Ronge also began this month. That project should be finished by the end of October.

The 2025-26 provincial budget includes $86 million in capital improvements to roads and airports, and $36.5 million in operation and maintenance in Northern Saskatchewan. A full list of highway projects in Northern Saskatchewan can be found online here.
