A pair of La Ronge Ice Wolves will be heading to college next season to play in the NCAA.

The Sask. Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team announced this week that forward Jacob Cossette and left winger Hudson Cameron have put pen to paper with separate programs, where they will both start playing in the fall.

Cossette, a local from Air Ronge, committed to Niagara University in Lewiston, New York and will become a member of the Purple Eagles in 2025-26.

The local-boy spent parts of the last four seasons with the Ice Wolves, scoring 92 points (37G-55A) in 139 games for the Teal and Purple, while adding another two goals and an assist in six playoff contests. Cossette also spent time in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) with the Spruce Grove Saints, where he scored 11 points (4G-7A) in 22 games during the 2022-23 season before being traded to La Ronge.

Niagara University is on the American side of Niagara Falls in the small town of Lewiston, New York, and play as an independent Division I team in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Last season, the Purple Eagles finished fourth in the Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) with a 16-9-1-1-2 record (W-L-T-OTW-OTL), before falling 2-1 to the United States Military Academy (Army) in their Quarterfinal series.

Cameron is also off to the Empire State, following his commitment to the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Cameron was a journeyman throughout his Jr. A career, with stops in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), and elsewhere in Saskatchewan. Hailing from Kamloops, B.C., the 5’10, 172 pound forward spent four games with the Nanaimo Clippers in the BCHL before being sent down to Jr. B. It wasn’t until next season when he got another chance in Jr. A, this time heading to Manitoba to play for the Portage Terriers. He lasted six games there before being traded to the Nipawin Hawks in 2022. A full season later, he was traded again to La Ronge where he rode out the rest of his career.

While with the Ice Wolves, Cameron had his best season in his final year in Jr. A, posting 19 goals and 34 assists for 53 points in 53 games in 2024-25. The season prior, he only appeared in seven games for La Ronge, collecting three assists.

Now, he’s off to New York to play for the Fredonia State Blue Devils, a college in the village of Fredonia who play in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) in NCAA Division III. Last season, the Blue Devils finished seventh in the conference with a 5-9-0-1 record (W-L-T-OTL).
