A potential plea is expected later this month in the criminal case involving North Battleford city councillor Ross MacAngus, who is facing a charge of sexual assault.

The matter was briefly addressed in North Battleford Provincial Court on Friday. MacAngus did not appear, but his lawyer, Brian Pfefferle, phoned in and told Judge Kevin Hill that while he had not finalized instructions due to other legal commitments, progress is expected in the coming days.

Pfefferle confirmed disclosure is complete and said he is awaiting an updated term sheet. He also noted it would be appropriate to waive delay in the case.

The matter was adjourned to May 22 at 9:30 a.m. The judge advised that if a plea is entered at that time, trial dates must be arranged in advance.

The charge against MacAngus stems from an incident reported to RCMP in September 2024 and was laid on Nov. 26.

He resigned from his role as Community Safety Officer for the Town of Battleford on Dec. 10, the same day as the charge became public. He remains a member of city council.

In a joint statement issued at the time, Mayor Kelli Hawtin and City Manager Dr. Randy Patrick said the city would not be commenting further while the matter proceeds through the courts. Further comment may be considered once the judicial process concludes.

The city also stated that, according to the Cities Act, this situation does not automatically disqualify MacAngus from being on council.
