Preparations underway for downtown youth sports event

May 9, 2025 | 12:12 PM

For the third year in a row, downtown Prince Albert will be transformed into a sports mecca for young athletes.

On Saturday, May 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sports on Central will feature various stations showcasing different sports, and participants will also be able to hear from local athletes during the one-of-a-kind event hosted by Plaza 88 on surrounding streets (Central & 9th).

“A lot of kids probably don’t even know all the different sports offered within Prince Albert and what is available to them. We have so many different sports opportunities in our city,” said Scott Manson, who is helping to organize the event.

“We’re going to have three basketball courts, a football field and a soccer field down 9th Street, a kids zone for the little ones with bouncy castles, face paint, and their own soccer field on Central Ave., and a hockey rink in the Plaza 88 parking lot along with booths representing the different organizations and clubs.”

One of the highlights of the day will be a hockey game played between members of the Prince Albert Police Service and Prince Albert Fire Department; entering the event’s third year, the series is tied 1-1.

The day will also feature guest appearances by the Prince Albert Raiders, Mintos, local teams, and mascots. The speakers this year will all be local individuals, Gage Grassick, Ali Diehl, and Norma Hanson, all of whom have had success in their fields.

Sports on Central is a community initiative led by Embassy Church. Organizers said the goal is to not only introduce kids to the range of sports available in the city, but also to let them know they’re seen and valued by their community.

“It’s all about the kids and providing them an opportunity to play sports,” said Manson. “To come out for a fun day, to get a good experience and to also highlight the opportunities in their city. I think our downtown is underrated and it has a lot of potential to thrive, so we want to do something for the downtown area as well.”

Manson expects attendance to rise this year based on success they’ve had the last two years. KidSport has been chosen as the charity of choice for Sports on Central.
