Getting back to how we play

Mustangs look to respond against Edmundston after loss to Calgary

May 10, 2025 | 11:13 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are back in action today for their second of four round-robin games at this year’s Centennial Cup.

Melfort dropped their opening game against the host Calgary Canucks on Thursday by a score of 3-1.

Now, they’ll face the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) champion Edmundston Blizzard, with puck drop set for 12 p.m. on Saturday.

“Thursday wasn’t the result we wanted, but one way to look at it is we can always get better now, so we just gotta get back to playing our game and hunting for W’s,” said Mustangs’ forward Austin Shepherd.

“Our effort is gonna have to be better today, along with our D zone, and just being hard and physical. Those things worked for us all playoffs, but last game we showed up and did it for only parts of the game, so the results didn’t go in our favour. If we just show up and play heavy and physical for 60 minutes, I think we’ll be successful against Edmundston.”

The Blizzard will feature a former Blue and Green member in Mathieu Pigeon.

According to Shepherd, the team has had a chance to catch up with him prior to today’s game, and while they remain friendly off the ice, he’s not their friend on it.

“He’s staying in the same hotel as us, so we went to chat with him and kind of catch up, but I mean, no friends on the ice, so we just have to play the game. He’s going to be coming hard at us, obviously a former player here, so we just have to stay dialled in and give it our all here.”

The pregame show will begin at 11:40 p.m. on 105CJVR.
