It was a celebration at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre on Sunday for the Prince Albert Barveenok Ukrainian Dance & Friends Year End Recital.

Forty five dancers performed 27 dances for the large afternoon crowd, with ages ranging from young to old with little to a lot of experience.

President of the club Kayleigh Skomorowski said it’s always an emotional time at the end of the year.

“It’s always bittersweet. I feel like when we get to this time of the year, we’re happy to be done, but also kind of sad to be done.”

The club travelled around the prairies performing at many different festivals, and despite this being the year end show, Barveenok has one more show left in Vegreville, Alta. for the communities Ukrainian Festival in July.

Skomorowski said that they’ll also host a camp for Ukrainian dance during the summer ahead of the September start of their new dance year.

“We run a summer camp [in the] third week of August, and there is some information on our website on that. Anyone that’s maybe thinking about trying Ukrainian dance, or if someone’s looking for something for their kid to do for a week in the summer, that’s a good way to test it out,” she said, adding that the number of members has been steadily climbing since the pandemic.

Following their performance in Vegreville, the group will prepare for the Barveenok’s Ukrainian Dance & Culture Camp scheduled for August 18-22.
