Somers’ hat trick leads Mustangs over Blizzard

The Melfort Mustangs picked up their first win at this year’s Centennial Cup on Saturday.

Melfort native Zac Somers had a hat trick to lift the Mustangs over the Edmundston Blizzard by a score of 5-3.

“Gotta give credit to Edmundston, they played with a lot of pace and jam, and we didn’t have a good first period. In the second and third, though, we found a way, and that’s the biggest thing. Hell of a night from Somers to put the boys on his back, he went to work there with a great group, and we got our first win, so now we go to the next,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“We take the win, and just learn that the way we played in the second and third, it was just a gutty effort, and that’s how we’re going to have to play the rest of the tournament.”

Saturday’s battle was a rough one between the two teams, as there were 13 combined power plays and 74 combined penalty minutes.

Overall, the Mustangs went 1 for 10 when they were on the man advantage.

“We had a lot of mental toughness, and the biggest thing was that we stayed composed. It’s very tough when the blood’s boiling, but obviously we were on top of the mental side, and we were the tougher team,” Scherger added.

“Some of our looks on the powerplay weren’t bad, but I think our decision making wasn’t all there. We got one goal which was huge, but the biggest thing moving forward is just to have better decision-making, that’s all.”

The Stangs will now have Sunday and Monday off, before they play their final two round-robin games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
