Nipawin Heliport now in operation

After years of planning, discussion, and hard work, the Nipawin Heliport is now fully operational.

The Twin Lakes District Planning Commission (TLDPC) has issued a news release, stating the heliport will “enhance emergency response capabilities and provide faster access to life-saving care for residents across northeast Saskatchewan.”

The heliport is designed to meet the operational requirement of Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS). The TLDPC said the heliport, just outside NIpawin Hospital, will enable faster, more efficient medical transport during emergencies.

The Twin Lakes District Planning Commission was instrumental in making the project happen. The TLDPC is made up of local municipalities, including the Town of Carrot River, Town of Choiceland, Town of Nipawin, Village of Codette, Village of White Fox, Rural Municipality of Nipawin No. 487, Rural Municipality of Torch River No. 488, Rural Municipality of Moose Range No. 486, and the Resort Village of Tobin Lake

TLDPC Chair Jerry Kindrat said the heliport is a major achievement for the entire region.

“It reflects our commitment to building safer, stronger communities through strategic partnerships and smart planning. We’re proud to have been part of making this vision a reality,” Kindrat said.

Amber Barrie, Manager of Clinical Services at Nipawin Hospital, said the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) congratulates the TLDPC on the achievement, and the positive impact it will have on patients in Nipawin and the surrounding area.

“The addition of the heliport at Nipawin Hospital means our most critical patients will have timely access to the urgent care they need and will optimize their chances for the best possible outcome,” Barrie said. “Thank you for your commitment to improving health care for residents in the northeast.”

The release said the heliport allows STARS helicopters to land near the hospital, meaning faster access to specialized care in larger centres like Saskatoon.

The organization will hold a grand opening event in the future, and the municipalities within the TLDPC extend thanks to all partners and stakeholders for making the project a success.
