Rain coming?

Rain possible this week as temperatures moderate

The hot, dry, windy weather will be giving way to more seasonable conditions – and a possibility of some precipitation.

The wildfire conditions may get a bit of a break over the coming days.

Danielle Desjardins of Environment and Climate Change Canada told northeastNOW there could be a chance of some showers today, with the possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Highs range from 16 C in the La Ronge area, to the low-to-mid 20s in North Battleford, Prince Albert, and Melfort regions.

“Beyond today, we’re looking at daytime highs that are a lot more normal for this time of year,” Desjardins said. Daytime highs in the mid-to-high teens are expected over the next couple of days, and it could be even cooler Thursday and Friday. The average daytime high for mid-May is about 17 C.

A Colorado Low is making its way up from the United States into the eastern Prairies, potentially bringing rain with it. Desjardins said the amount of precipitation in the forecast has changed in the last day or so, with a reduced chance of rain and lower amounts than first expected as the system is expected to move further east than originally thought.

Desjardins said the closer you are to the Manitoba border, the higher your chances of getting substantial rain with that system. The rain is expected from Wednesday into Thursday.

“I would keep an eye on the forecast, because that rain is not necessarily certain, as Saskatchewan is on the western edge of that precipitation-no precipitation line.”

As the weather cools later this week, that could mean a few cold nights as well. There is a potential of frost later this week. Lows are expected to hover just above zero, but a risk of frost exists Friday and Saturday.

Desjardins said the weekend should be dry with seasonal temperatures, and there may be some precipitation coming the middle of next week according to early projections.
