Grease returns to E.A. Rawlinson Centre

The Broadway North Theatre company is taking us back to a time when Elvis was king and date night was a drive-in movie.

They’ve announced Grease as this fall’s big production. Prince Albert’s favourite citizen Malcolm Jenkins was a member of the original cast when they first performed it 28 years ago.

“It’s pretty magnificent for one of the better words. It’s a great thing,” he said.

Jenkins noted the theatre company’s first show Westside Story did very well and then followed it up with Big River.

“Which was a great show and we lost our shirt because people thought it was about the Mississippi and then the third year we did Grease to revive our coffers and it was crazy, we had about 4,000 people come,” he said.

And not one to miss out on the fun, Jenkins will reprise his role as teen angel.

“I’m back by popular demand,” he joked.

The award winning musical that was first performed in 1971, and has seen success on both the stage and screen, is both a love letter to the 1950’s and a playful satire of teenage rebellion, featuring beloved hits like Greased Lightnin’, We Go Together, and Hopelessly Devoted to You.

Jenkins was asked why he thinks the story and the songs continue to be so popular.

Grease is a perennial. It’s like Shakespeare and actors do Hamlet [or] Macbeth. You’d say how come it’s lasted. 500 years. I think Grease will probably last 500 … everyone loves it.

Director Mike Langlois also expressed his excitement to bring Grease back to Prince Albert after 28 years and to celebrate the Broadway North legacy.

“I’m looking forward to reuniting with old friends and welcoming new talent. The creative team and cast can’t wait to share this musical theatre magic with the community this August!”

The performance dates are August 13–16 and August 20–23. There’s also matinees on August 16 and 23.

Tickets go on sale July 3.
