Measles is highly contagious and is spread through the air. The virus can live for up to two hours in the air or on a surface. It can spread from four days before a rash appears until four days after a rash develops. If you were exposed and are not vaccinated, are unsure of your vaccination status, or develop symptoms you are urged to call 811.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, fatigue, irritability, small white spots inside the mouth and throat and a red blotchy rase which develops on the face and spreads roughly three to seven days after symptoms begin.

If you were potentially exposed, you may be eligible for preventative treatment for up to six days after exposure. If you are symptomatic, do not attend a clinic in person. Call 811 for instruction.

If you are in distress and require emergency care, do not delay seeking care. You are requested to call the emergency department before attending and inform the staff you were exposed to measles. That will ensure staff can put proper precautions in place.

Vaccination prevents measles. The province ensures the vaccine is safe, effective and free. With two doses, prevention is nearly 100 per cent effective.
