What to do in the event of a postal strike in Saskatchewan

May 14, 2025 | 10:40 AM

The province is preparing in case of a postal strike, which could begin before the end of the month.

In a media release, the government stated ministries, Crowns and agencies have prepared contingency plans in the event of a strike. All are encouraged to switch payment to direct deposit.

The Ministry of Social Services also encourages the switch to direct deposit as benefit cheques could be disrupted by the mail strike.

For those with drug plans and extended benefits who are required to submit letters to private insurance providers for special support, the seniors’ drug plan or exception drug status can submit their request online via the Saskatchewan Formulary.

There may be a delay for application and delivery of health cards, birth, death and marriage certificates.

Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation plans to work with customers to find alternative arrangements on accessing information delivered through Canada Post. Producers are encouraged to sign up for direct deposit payments.

Suppliers unable to register for direct deposit will be able to pick up supplier cheques in Regina. To make arrangements, call 306-787-7450.

Despite the postal dispute, businesses are still expected to file and pay taxes to the Ministry of Finance by deadline. A mail delay will not change the deadline or assessment of penalties and interest. Tax clients are encouraged to sign up for an online Saskatchewan eTax Services portal where they can file and pay electronically to avoid delay penalties.

If you do not use direct deposit, you can call 1-800-667-6102 to set it up, delay a refund, grant payment or request a courier delivery at your cost.

SGI, SaskTel, SaskPower and SaskEnergy all invite users to sign up for online billing to avoid delay or disruption. You are encouraged to visit the Crown websites to explore the options as longer than usual wait times are expected at the customer service locations.

Backup options are being developed for the Public Guardian and Trustee’s office to help those who receive payment cheques via mail. If you use direct deposit, you will not be affected.

To register for direct deposit, you can do so by calling 1-877-787-5424 or email pgt@gov.sk.ca.
