B.C. district wants avian flu testing on ostriches facing cull
The Regional District of Central Kootenay in British Columbia says it will ask the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to conduct further testing for avian flu on a flock of ostriches facing a cull, before the region’s landfill accepts the carcasses.
Supporters of the farmers who oppose the cull have celebrated the district’s resolution online, suggesting it means the landfill will not accept the remains unless the birds test positive for avian flu.
But Teresa Weatherhead, a director for the area that includes Edgewood, B.C., where Universal Ostrich Farm is located, said Thursday that the effect of Thursday’s resolution is unclear because the regional government has no power over the federal agency.
Weatherhead said the region’s landfill is “absolutely” equipped to deal with the carcasses if needed, but requesting further information about if the birds are infected was the board’s best option to “advocate” for the farm and its owners.
