Mustangs win wild, final round robin contest in OT

May 15, 2025 | 10:09 AM

At times it was really good, and then it was not so good, but ultimately, in the end, the Melfort Mustangs were able to win their final round robin game at the Centennial Cup in Calgary.

Needing overtime, the Mustangs took down the Braves de Valleyfield 5-4, as they picked up their third win of the tournament.

“It’s playoff time now, just like the SJHL playoffs when we had them, it’s go time now. In the round robin, guys were adjusting to the Centennial style a little bit, but now it’s the playoffs, and it’s gonna have to be a desperate mode every single game. It’s gonna be three games in three days, so it’s gonna be a lot of nutrition, rest and making sure we’re ready to go,” said Assistant Coach Tye Scherger.

“We’re gonna have to touch on a couple of things in practice on Thursday, just try and get everything primed up and in a nice flow, and then we should be ready to go.”

Melfort had five players make their tournament debut in Wednesday’s game against the Braves, as they looked to keep everybody fresh and ready to go, should they be needed.

With the victory, they finished in second place in their group’s standings, meaning they’ll be the ‘home team’ in their quarterfinal matchup.

“We wanted to get those younger guys in because if something happens in the playoffs where one of our starters goes down, then they have to be ready to go. It was good to get one under the belt for them, they looked good, and it was a scrappy game, but that’s gonna happen, so overall, it was alright,” Scherger added.

The schedule for the quarter-final games has now been released as the Stangs have been notified that they will play the NOJHL Champion Greater Sudbury Cubs, Friday at 4 p.m.
