Filibeans opens in new permanent location

From a coffee shop on wheels to a new leased space, La Ronge’s Filibeans owner Jefferson Ching is excited about the future.

He began serving drinks like coffee and boba in 2024 out of a trailer outside of Lakeside Spirits and Penny’s Hair Design. Now, Ching has expanded his offerings as he opened a rented spot inside the salon last Saturday.

“I just wanted to say we are very thankful for the community because they embraced us and they embraced our culture,” said Ching.

“As of the moment, we are also happy to be serving our community. It’s not just the income, it’s about the give and take.”

Originally from the Philippines, Ching takes pride in his heritage by importing coffee beans and powders from that country. Since moving into the new space, he has also begun serving new menu items such as traditional fried spring rolls and dumplings.

In order to get the new location ready, Ching had to invest in plumbing upgrades and other minor renovations. The new cafe also has a small seating area for guests.

The entire project took 45 days to come together, and Ching hopes to now be open year-round.

“They (customers) are happy because … they think our coffee shop is aesthetic because of the design and interior work. We are happy, and they like our snacks,” he remarked.

Filibeans will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days per week. Ching is also looking to hire part-time and full-time students to assist him during the summer months.
