The City of Prince Albert and the Prince Albert Indian and Métis Friendship Centre (PAIMFC) have formalized their agreement to develop a ceremonial and cultural grounds in the upper plains of the Little Red River Park.

Shane Bird of the PAIMFC approached council over a year ago with the idea of creating spaces for ceremonies, gatherings and a way to engage youth at the park.

“In the spirit of reconciliation, we stand together in unity,” said Bird. He said the agreement is the first of its kind in Saskatchewan.

He wants to be able to support all youth and help them grow a sense of belonging and connectedness.

“This is a meaningful step forward in our journey of reconciliation,” said Mayor Bill Powalinsky.

The deal lines up with Call to Action 45.iii, of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which is to renew treaty relationships based on mutual respect and shared responsibility.
