Beavers improve to 2-0 to start off season

The North Battleford Beavers moved to 2-0 in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League (NSRBL) last Wednesday after surviving a late surge from the Lloydminster Twins to hang on for an 11-9 victory in a game that ended prematurely due to darkness.

It was a tale of two games as the Beavers jumped out to a commanding 11-0 lead before the Twins started to mount an improbable comeback. North Battleford did all of its scoring early on, with an offensive explosion coming from Gavin Nolin, who had three hits and two runs, including a grand slam.

Nolin also starred on the mound, throwing four scoreless innings, including eight strikeouts to start the game. His two-way performance earned him a well-deserved star of the game honours.

Kye Thom and Hudson Ford, who also play for U18 AA North Battleford Beavers, were named game stars as well for their efforts and stepping up to take a key role in the Beavers’ win. Thom scored one run on two plate appearances while Ford earned two runs and a hit on four plate appearances.

Despite holding an 11-run lead, the Beavers watched the Twins claw their way back into the game with a big rally in the later innings. However, with the daylight fading and no stadium lights available, the game was called after five innings with the Beavers still ahead 11-9.

“We just got some mental errors there that kind of cost us. We were just playing our game and we kind of just let them slide back in and make a run for it. We were hoping to finish it off, but we just couldn’t quite do it in the fourth, but we ended up only playing five innings and we did end up getting the win, so all in all, a pretty good start,” said Beavers player/coach, Kyle Gregoire.

The Beavers will look to stay perfect as they head into their next matchup this Thursday, May 22 against the Lashburn Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. at Beaver Lions Stadium. The Beavers were also supposed to play a game on Monday, May 19 against the Standard Hill Lakers but the game was postponed due to weather. A date for the game is still yet to be determined.
