Crown demands plea after repeated delays in Ross MacAngus sexual assault case

The Crown is pressing for a plea to be entered next week in the sexual assault case involving North Battleford city councillor Ross MacAngus, following a series of delays.

During a brief court appearance Thursday, defence lawyer Zachary Carter, appearing on behalf of MacAngus’s lawyer Brian Pfefferle, told Judge Kevin Hill that Pfefferle is still seeking to solidify instructions on the matter in the Supreme Court.

Carter then requested a one-week adjournment to May 29, but Senior Crown Prosecutor Sheryl Fillo objected, saying the case has already faced multiple delays and that she had previously advised Pfefferle she is only available on May 27.

“This has been adjourned week upon week upon week,” Fillo said. “On that day, I expect the plea either way.”

In late April, Pfefferle told the court a plea could be expected soon, noting the defence had received full disclosure. However, the matter has continued to face repeated delays. During a May 9 appearance, Pfefferle again said disclosure was complete and that he was awaiting an updated term sheet. At that time, he indicated a plea could be expected today, May 22.

MacAngus has not personally appeared in court during any of the proceedings to date. He is charged with one count of sexual assault in connection with an incident reported to RCMP in September 2024. The charge was formally laid in late November.

The matter is now set to return to North Battleford Provincial Court on May 27 morning with a waiver of delay on the record.
