Gas flaring scheduled in R.M. of Spiritwood

If you spot flames lighting up the sky northeast of Leoville in the coming days, don’t be alarmed; it’s a controlled flare.

SaskEnergy says it will be conducting intermittent flaring from Saturday, May 24 to Monday, June 2, at a block valve site about nine kilometres from the village, within the R.M. of Spiritwood.

A 40-foot flame will be visible from a temporary flare stack used to safely burn off natural gas during maintenance on the pipeline system.

The process is a routine industry practice that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 85 per cent compared to venting. SaskEnergy says the area will be closely monitored, and service to local customers won’t be affected.
