Two RCMP vehicles hit by suspected impaired drivers, including one in Tisdale

A close call for the RCMP as two police vehicles have been hit by impaired drivers in recent days.

One of the incidents was in Tisdale on Monday.

RCMP received a report of an erratic driver in Tisdale, and an officer found the vehicle parked outside a business.

The officer turned on emergency lights and pulled behind the suspect vehicle, which then reversed and hit the police cruiser.

A woman was charged with impaired driving.

Two days later, Swift Current City RCMP were conducting a curfew check at a Swift Current home, and a vehicle with no lights on drove erratically and hit the parked police vehicle.

The man driving was charged with impaired driving in that case as well, and the RCMP vehicle is no longer drivable.

“I’ve been an RCMP officer for more than 48 years and this is a new one – two impaired drivers striking police vehicles in a matter of days,” says Supt. Grant St. Germaine, officer in charge of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. “What’s not new is my frustration that some people just aren’t getting the message: impaired driving is dangerous and can lead to tragic results.”

Supt. St. Germaine said RCMP will continue to remind drivers to get behind a wheel while impaired, whether that be through alcohol, drugs, or fatigue.

He also points to recent Canada Road Safety Week enforcement, held from May 13 to 19 in various parts of the province. The safety initiative was a partnership between Saskatchewan RCMP and Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan, including municipal police agencies.

More than 6600 vehicles were stopped during Canada Road Safety Week May 13 to 19.

The safety initiative is a partnership between Saskatchewan RCMP and Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan. During the week, 41 drivers were charged with Criminal Code alcohol-related impaired driving offences, and three drivers were charged with Criminal Code drug-related impaired driving offences. There were also 59 roadside suspensions due to alcohol, and 67 due to drug consumption.
