Led by the Prince Albert Highlanders Pipes and Drums band, more than three dozen people paraded through Kinsmen Park on Saturday to support a great cause.

The IG Wealth Walk for Alzheimer’s raised $39,779. Roughly $15,000 came from online and offline donations and the rest came from the Malcom J. Jenkins Family Foundation and the Ripley Family, who contributed $25,000.

Kim Neudorf was walking in memory of her mother, who lived with Alzheimer’s for over 10 years.

“This is just a good cause to extend research in the area of Alzheimer’s. There’s lots of amazing things that are happening with genetic testing and predicting, you know, and maybe lifestyle changes,” she said.

In Saskatchewan, there’s over 20,000 people living with dementia, and in the next 30 years, the Alzheimer Society expects that number to more than double.

In addition to recognizing the people lost due to Alzheimer’s and the thousands of people living with dementia, the walk also raised awareness of the fact that dementia affects an entire family, and caregivers will give a lot of themselves every day.

“We were very fortunate in that mom was a joy to be around right up until her final weeks and so it was easy to be with her but it isn’t always,” Neudorf explained. “Sometimes dementia can be really cruel and it’s hard for families to see their loved one that way.”

Laura Erickson-Lumb, First Link coordinator representing the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, was pleased with the outpouring of support from the community.

“Anytime you do fundraising stuff, whatever you get as a fundraising is absolutely wonderful. So it’s really wonderful when it exceeds your expectations.”

While addressing the crowd, Erickson-Lumb commented that without fundraising they will never be able to stem the tide of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

This year marked the event’s seventh anniversary in Prince Albert.

In addition to national sponsor IG Wealth Management and provincials sponsors SIGA and Sasktel, other sponsors included Nutter’s, Boston Pizza, Econo Lumber, Pattison Media Group and the Prince Albert Daily Herald.

Organizers are already looking ahead to next year’s event and aim to recruit more people to the planning committee.
