Daring fundraiser hopes to lift kids into sports

Dwight Bergstrom hopes he’ll be spending Friday night sleeping 20-feet off the ground on top of a scissor lift.

It is actually a fundraiser for the local charity KidSport which provides grants to help cover the cost of registration fees so all kids ages five to 18 in Prince Albert can play a season of sport.

“If the application is approved, we can fund up to $500 per child for sport registration fees,” said Bergstrom, who is a KidSport committee member in Prince Albert. “The average amount that is funded per child, per application, is around $180. It’s a fairly well-known program in Prince Albert that if you’re short of cash in your family and you want to have kids involved with sport, you should take time to fill out a KidSports application, apply and see if we can get it approved.”

The organization is close to Bergstrom’s heart as he’s seen first-hand the impact the organization has made. He spoke about a single mom of four boys who used the charity to keep them involved in sports.

“They didn’t go on to be world champion athletes, but they did play very well for high school teams and some of them did play for the U of S Huskies,” said Bergstrom. “Better than that was them becoming amazing human beings because it gave them the self-esteem and the confidence and life skills to go on and do well in post-secondary. So, [the mother] was happy to see her kids involved with sport, but they were all the more happy to see what kind of kids they turned out to be as a result of that involvement.”

Bergstrom said Prince Albert has had one of the largest percentages of youth living below the poverty line in the province. He hopes that disadvantage will be considered by potential donors.

“I like the saying that it takes a village to raise a child and to me that makes all the sense in the world.”

Bergstrom has taken on the scissor lift challenge for the past few years. His goal is to raise $10,000 by 9 p.m. on Friday, May 30. If he does, he’ll spend the night on the scissor lift which will be set up in front of Dr. Java’s. Cash and cheque donations will be accepted that day, but he encourages the public to make a donation online in advance.
