Nav Canada building could be used to expand NAR operations

The Town of La Ronge is interested in accepting a former instrument building from Nav Canada.

The building, which will be stripped of its instruments, is located at the La Ronge Airport and will be ready for relocation next month. Administration has determined the building would be well suited to expand the town’s animal pound and Northern Animal Rescue operations (NAR).

NAR is interested in acquiring the building and renovating it to create new kennels and storage.

“A local contractor has indicated that if it were to support NAR, they would relocate it behind the existing NAR facility at no cost,” a document prepared for council states.

“The building is outfitted for lighting, heating, and air conditioning, but will need electrical service from the parks and recreation shop. This will come at a considerable cost given there is no remaining electrical capacity at the shop (i.e., a new panel would be needed).”

The ongoing operational impact to utilities is unknown at this time and is dependent on type of lighting inside, as well as levels of seasonal heating [and] cooling. NAR would need to coordinate volunteer labour for renovations and may need assistance with materials or other project costs.

The added development of the site could impact the regional group exploration of a new animal control facility. Either this development may be seen as throwaway costs due to a new facility being developed elsewhere in the region soon, or it may be an opportunity to renovate the entire parks and recreation shop into the new regional facility.

Members of La Ronge council seemed interested in acquiring the building for NAR. The idea will be brought back to council at a later date for a final decision.

“NAR is very good at raising money,” said Coun. Abby Besharah.

“They have done a lot, so having the opportunity for any expansion is really fantastic. I thought this was a neat idea.”
