Two college commitments already for PA Minor Baseball

The baseball season has only been underway for a few weeks already, and already it’s been a good start to the year for Prince Albert Minor Baseball.

President of Prince Albert Minor Baseball Nathan Noble said it is an exciting year to be a part of their group as they have again continued to grow the amount of athletes joining their sport.

“We’ve got over 300 athletes again signed up for some minor baseball this year and as far as past years go, it’s a strong number again. We’ve created six teams in the 18U, six teams in the 11U, four teams in the 13U and a couple teams in the 15U to just play house league baseball. On top of that, we have two provincial teams at 11, two provincial teams at 13, a provincial team at 15, and a provincial team at 18. So lots of teams that we’ve created and lots of baseball has been going on for about a month now.”

There’s also lots to celebrate early this year as two of Prince Albert’s baseball players have made commitments to their future. Isaiah Parent has made his commitment to play with the Prairie Baseball Academy in Lethbridge next year, and Brandon Moose will be heading to the Edmonton Collegiate Hawks Baseball Club in the fall.

For Noble, seeing these kids make their commitments this early has something to do with starting camps in Prince Albert a little earlier than they have been in the past.

“We’ve hosted our camps and our clinics over the winter time to get kids playing ball in the winter, so we do that at the Alfred Jenkins Field House, and we run a camp over the February break. We start our evaluations and spring training in March inside the Alfred Jenkins and so we’ve been going for quite a while and it’s worked out well, it’s helped our numbers, it helped our provincial teams get going a little earlier than we have in the past.”

Prince Albert Minor Baseball is hoping to host provincials this year as well, and that would add to a long list of events and tournaments coming to the city already.

“We host a couple of house league tournaments every year. The first weekend in June and the second weekend in June, we run an 11U this first weekend in June and then a 13U tournament the second weekend in June, and our provincial teams are trying to run a tournament at the end of June, so that would be like June 27-29. We’re trying to host provincials, they would be the third weekend in in July like the 18-19 and then also another set of provincials on the 25, 26, 27.”

Now a month into the season, there is a lot of hope that minor baseball players from Prince Albert may even get to represent the province as a part of Team Saskatchewan.

“We’ll have some kids trying out for Team Sask. provincial baseball, that happens in June here, some of those provincial trials for the 13U, 15U, 18U age groups, so we’ll have some kids go down to that and give that a go and look forward to hopefully having a couple of kids make those teams.”

If Prince Albert Minor Baseball is successful in its bid to host provincials, they may need more volunteers from around the community to help run the tournament.
