City councillor yet to enter plea for sex assault charge

May 28, 2025 | 10:30 AM

There is one more chance for Ross MacAngus to enter a plea.

MacAngus, currently a city councillor for the North Battleford, is facing one count of sexual assault. Since his initial charge last fall, he has not made an appearance in court.

“I just want to put on the record, the matter was adjourned last week because – and it has been for several weeks – now each week I’m told that (defence counsel Brian Pfefferle)’s meeting with his client,” said Crown Prosecutor Shery Fillo, who said she only has one more date available to deal with this case.

The latest dealing in court is the latest in a litany of delays. In a previous court scheduling discussion, Fillo stated she expected the plea May 27.

“This has been adjourned week upon week upon week,” Fillo said on May 22. “On that day (May 27) I expect the plea either way.”

Aleida Oberholzer, the lawyer appearing as agent for the defence told Judge Daniel Joseph O’Hanlon, there are a lot of moving parts.

MacAngus was charged in November 2024 in relation to an alleged incident that took place September 2024. Since he was charged, he resigned from his position as Community Safety Officer. He remains on council.

The case was adjourned to June 4.
