There was a feeling of celebration in the air today in Kerrobert as a new group home officially opened its doors, becoming a place of comfort and support for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Kindersley-Biggar MLA Kim Gartner on behalf of Social Services Minister Terry Jenson were on hand today, alongside representatives from Prairie Branches Enterprises Inc. to cut the ribbon and celebrate the grand opening. The Ministry of Social Services is investing approximately $500,000 annually to operate the home, which will provide 24-hour supervision and assistance with daily tasks for up to four individuals.

“Fostering strong, inclusive communities for individuals with disabilities remains a priority for our government,” Social Services Minister Terry Jenson said. “We are proud to partner with Prairie Branches Enterprises to support the operation of this group home. Through collaboration and dedicated support, we aim to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and ensure they have access to the necessary resources to thrive in our communities.”

Prairie Branches Enterprises Inc., the organization operating the home, has a long-standing presence in the region, delivering services across Wilkie, Biggar, Unity, and now Kerrobert. They support more than 100 individuals through group homes, supportive living programs, and day programs.

The new home in Kerrobert is designed to adapt as residents’ needs evolve, offering long-term stability and comfort close to home.

“This house has become a home for several local individuals, and we are very proud to be able to provide supports so these folks can remain in their hometown, close to their family and friends,” Prairie Branches Enterprise Inc. Executive Director Marissa Merkel said. “We have worked alongside the Ministry of Social Services Community Living Service Delivery to ensure we are setting people up for success and appreciate their continued support of our agency on this new venture.”

The Kerrobert location builds on Prairie Branches’ existing roots in the community. Since launching a vocational program there in 2020, the organization has received strong local support, something Merkel hopes will continue with the new home.

“We are very excited about expanding our residential services into the community,” she said. “We are hopeful that the positive momentum will continue and are grateful to be a part of Kerrobert,” Merkel said.
