Pride, Philippine flags to be raised in La Ronge in June

May 28, 2025 | 11:40 AM

Flags representing Pride Month and the Philippines will be raised in La Ronge next month.

Permission to do so was granted by town council at a regular meeting on Monday. The Pride flag will be flown from June 1 to 7, then again from June 14 to 30, while the national flag of the Philippines will be flown from June 8 to 13.

There is only one community flagpole in La Ronge, which is the reason for the Pride flag being lowered for one month in June in honour of Filipino Heritage Month.

The Town of La Ronge has also decided to proclaim June as Pride Month. An official flag raising ceremony will be held June 1 at 7 p.m. in Patterson Park. There doesn’t appear to be any other Pride-related public events occurring in the tri-communities in June.

“We believe it is very important for the flag to be visible to let people know they have support in the community in these troubling times,” Valerie G. Barnes Connell Jordan wrote to council on behalf of the Lac La Ronge Regional Pride Committee.

In regards to Filipino Heritage Month, residents are invited to La Ronge Kikinahk Friendship Centre for a free event on June 7 at 5 p.m. It will also include a flag raising ceremony, as well as the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, speeches, community fellowship and a feast.

The national flag of the Philippines was first raised in La Ronge in 2024. More than 300 local residents identify as Filipino-Canadians and June 12 marks the Philippine Independence Day.
