RCMP shoot suspect in arm following confrontation in field

May 29, 2025 | 5:46 PM

Two suspects are in RCMP custody following an arrest that involved a confrontation between officers and armed suspects who had been chased into a field near Canwood.

One of the suspects was shot in the arm before being arrested by responding officers from the Warrant and Enforcement Suppression Team and the Crime Reduction Team from Prince Albert.

On Wednesday, just after noon, officers found a dark-coloured SUV which matched the description of a suspect vehicle near Crutwell that was being hunted by officers from Ahtahkakoop, Prince Albert, Meadow Lake, Big River and Spiritwood.

Officers activated their emergency lights and tried to pull the SUV over, but the driver did not comply. Police then began pursuing the suspects and used a spike belt to try and stop the vehicle.

The suspects then drove off the road and into a field about 10 kilometres east of Canwood, but hit a washout and came to a stop.

As police approached, the man who was driving got out holding a gun, and a confrontation ensued that ended when one of the officers shot the man in the arm.

Both he and the woman who was found in the passenger seat were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 32-year-old driver was arrested on drug and gun warrants outstanding from Melfort and Île-à-la-Crosse.

Jasmine Head, a 30-year-old member of the Peter Chapman Band, was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Melfort for firearms charges.

She has also been charged with robbery and gun charges coming from an incident on the James Smith Cree Nation on May 17.

In that incident, Lyle Arcand, Samara Head and Keisten Deschambeault were arrested at the scene after two homes were targeted with suspects carrying guns. One woman remained at large.

One resident was shot, but not fatally.

Police recovered a gun at the scene of the field arrest and charges have not yet been laid.

Because the incident was an officer-involved shooting, the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team has been notified and will investigate that aspect.
