Young entrepreneurs looking to make a mark in their communities now have an initiative they may turn to for help with their budding businesses.

The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce has announced a Young Entrepreneur Bursary Program that provides $5,000 to 57 business-minded young people and the local chamber is looking to help applicants in the Battlefords.

“I think it’s really positive,” said Linda Machniak, chief operating officer, Battlefords and District Chamber of Commerce.

“Obviously, we want to ensure a continuity of business and having young entrepreneurs get support and peer networking but also become part of the mentorship program in the package.”

The program is funded by the province and is open to entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35 who have businesses that have been in operation for 10 years or less.

Applications are now open and will close July. 14. Recipients will be announced Sept. 30.

“Everybody can use an extra $5,000, I’m sure,” she said.

Machniak explained recipients may use the money in a variety of ways.

“It’s not very restrictive, they should have lots of opportunity to find – you know – they could add product lines, they could do lots of different things, so I’m actually excited to see the ideas that come forward,” she said.

Once the scholarships are announced, the chamber will host a regional ceremony and she said they are looking forward meeting the entrepreneurs as they go through the process of applying.

“I think it’s a great program, we’ve been really excited,” she said, noting she believes it’s important for the young business owners to engage with the more established business community.

“I’m really looking forward to it and I think…it’ll be a really great thing.”
