Devin Bernatchez as announced his intention to resign as the Lac La Ronge Indian Band councillor for Sucker River, effectively immediately.

His decision to do so was made public on Friday through a letter circulated on social media. In it, he wrote he enjoyed working with his colleagues and the community to deliver for the residents of Sucker River.

Bernatchez stated he decided to leave council because of family reasons.

“Over the past few months, we have had many long chats about our shared future,” he wrote. “We are very grateful to work for the band, however, due to changing circumstances, I have decided to step aside from band politics.”

Bernatchez expressed his gratitude for the experiences and opportunities he was given while serving as a councillor. He gave also gave thanks to local Elders for their wisdom, compassion and prayers.

The announcement came as a shock and surprise for Chief Tammy Cook-Searson, who said she respects his decision to resign.

“Devin is a great councillor,” she remarked.

“He’s always put the community first, and he was really proactive and just being out there and doing so many things, whether it was for youth, community members, promoting the language, the culture, building new facilities in the community and just making sure he is always available for the community members.”

larongeNOW reached out to Bernatchez for an interview, but didn’t receive a response by publishing.
