Broncos sign B.C. defenceman, former goalie commits to Miami University

The Humboldt Broncos have added a young defenceman to their squad for the coming season.

Williams Lake, B.C. native, Ben Fofonoff has committed to the Broncos for the 2025/26 year.

The 2007-born product has played the last three seasons with the Cariboo Cougars in Prince George, splitting time with their U17 and U18 AAA teams.

In 120 combined games, regular season and post, the 18-year-old has produced 64 points. This last year in particular, he had 28 points in 44 games.

“Ben comes from a highly regarded program with the Cariboo Cougars, where we’ve had Broncos come from and be extremely successful before. He’s the new-age defenceman who moves pucks and creates offence from the back end. We are really excited about our young D-core we have added, and they should instantly push our veterans for playing time,” said Broncos’ Head Coach and GM Brayden Klimosko.

During just the 2024/25 regular season, Fofonoff had 25 points, which ranked seventh in the league among defencemen and led his Cougars team.

Marik Mamic and former Humboldt forward Josh Sale share similarities with the 5’11, 170lbs right-shot blueliner, as all three are graduates of the Caribou program, who have now made their way to the Green and Gold.

In other club-related news, former goaltender Benjamin Motew has announced his commitment to Miami University.

Motew played two full seasons in the Boldt, spanning 88 games. He recorded 54 wins and had goals against averages of 2.73 and 2.74 in the regular seasons, to go along with 2.18 and 2.49 in the playoffs. He also registered save percentages of .906 and .915 in the regular season and .934 and .932 in the postseason.

Last year, he played in the North American Hockey League (NAHL), splitting his time with the Maryland Black Bears and Corpus Christi IceRays.

The 20-year-old netminder originally committed to Air Force Academy in Colorado, but will now be playing in Ohio. Both Air Force Academy and Miami University are NCAA Division I programs.
