MRC providing mental health supports to wildfire evacuees; seeking various donations

May 30, 2025 | 2:00 PM

The Marguerite Riel Centre in Melfort will be assisting wildfire evacuees over the coming days and weeks.

Staff at the centre have been asked to help provide mental health and other supports to evacuees in Melfort, Prince Albert, and potentially Saskatoon. They issued a release stating that there may be a shortage of staff at the Marguerite Riel Centre while these supports are being provided.

The Marguerite Riel Centre also announced they will be assembling bags for Elders, children, and those who need mental health help. The centre is asking the public for donations to help with the project, though clothing is not being collected due to other organizations taking up that cause.

They are looking for crossword-type books, large print reading material, playing cards, tea, snacks, and other stress relieving activities or items to help comfort Elders.

For families, they are seeking small board games, travel-sized games, colouring or activity books, small stuffed animals, children’s snacks, juice boxes, reading material, family activities, and other stress relieving items.

Hygiene bags are also being prepared, and the centre is looking for travel size shampoo, soaps, feminine hygiene items, shaving items, deodorant, towels, wash cloths, and more.

Items for youngsters are also needed, including formula, soothers, diapers, and small blankets.

The centre is asking for new donations only, as the resources to wash and clean items is not yet available.

Monetary donations are also being accepted, but donors can let the centre know they are for fire evacuees to help separate them from other centre donations. E-transfer has not yet been set up.
