Teen with gun receives conditional discharge

A 14-year-old youth caught with a gun has received a conditional discharge.

In other words as long as he can follow a number of conditions he won’t have a criminal record.

On May 9, Prince Albert Police was told about a group of three teen boys walking in the area of 13th Street West and 16th Avenue West. One of the teens was reportedly carrying a shotgun so officers began to canvas the area looking for the suspects.

Three boys matching the subject description were spotted walking west on the Rotary Trail. While two of them stopped for police, the third was found a short time later but did not stop so a foot pursuit ensued.

An officer with the Canine Unit saw the teen reach for his waistband and saw him holding a gun, so they released the service dog, who made contact.

The suspect again started to pull the gun from his waistband so an officer used their Conducted Energy Weapon, which contacted the teen. He then threw the gun over the fence before officers arrested him.

Parkland Ambulance checked the teen for any injures and police officers found the gun after a search. When he was searched at police cells, officers found ammunition as well.

According to discussion heard in court, the youth, who did not have a criminal record, was holding the gun for the older boys. All three were from a community in northern Saskatchewan and have since returned.

As per the Youth Criminal Justice Act, no information can be published that would identify the youth and in this case that could include naming the small community where he and the other boys are from.

The gun was initially described by police as a sawed off shotgun but after being analyzed only the handle was modified. Crown Prosecutor Cam Scott, who had been seeking at least probation, told paNOW the gun resembled something from one of the Terminator movies.
