Closures expanded in Prince Albert National Park due to fire risk

Windy, warm, and dry conditions has led to extreme fire danger in Prince Albert National Park, and for that reason several backcountry areas are closed.

To reduce the risk of human-caused wildfire, the park expanded its existing closure implemented on May 28 to include all lakes, excluding Waskesiu Lake, Kingsmere Road west of the main marina, the Narrows Road, all outlying campgrounds including Sandy (Halkett Lake), Namekus Lake an the Narrows Lake and the Narrows Campground, the Valleyview trail network excluding Valleyview easy and moderate trails; all trails on Highway 263 and Cookson Road. The ban issued May 5 remains in place for all areas of Prince Albert National park.

In a media release, Parks Canada states it closes areas only when absolutely necessary to protect natural and cultural resources.

It is illegal and unsafe to enter closed areas. Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act, which carries a maximum penalty of $25,000.

Waskesiu Lake townsite remains open. Before heading on trails, make sure to check the Parks Canada website or contact the visitor centre (1-306-663-4522) to ensure the trail is open. If you see a wildfire, a campfire or suspicious smoke, you are urged to report it to Parks Canada dispatch at 1-877-852-3100.

The town of Waskesiu is not under immediate threat. But due to extreme fire hazard, a wildfire could start at anytime and the situation could change. Visitors to the park should prepare for emergencies, including a possible evacuation.
