‘Kind of pointless’: RM of Beaver River not issuing fire ban

It was following a lively discussion from six councillors in the Rural Municipality of Beaver River No. 622 that the decision was made not to enact a fire ban in early May.

“A couple of the councillors felt, I think that it was – to put in a fire ban – if people want to burn, they’re going to burn anyway,” said Debbie Johnson, administrator RM Beaver River.

“Council I think felt that it was kind of pointless.”

The RM is just over four kilometres from Meadow Lake Provincial Park which has implemented a fire ban and as such, it does take care of a section of the municipality.

According to the administrator, there were two motions brought to the table – to decide whether to issue Level 2 and Level 3 bans – both were struck down.

“In some instances, I think that council feels that people should be responsible enough to know that they shouldn’t be burning, I guess,” she said.

“It was just a very…lively discussion.”

Regardless of the fact that they are one of the only municipalities in northern Saskatchewan not to issue a ban, Johnson said she will not issue fire permits.

“It is fairly dry here.”
