Nipawin shows off town attractions, local area during annual Media Day

The Town of Nipawin once again got to showcase their great neck of the woods during the annual Media Day.

The 54th rendition of the day precluded the 54th annual Great Northern Pike Festival, which will begin Father’s Day (June 15).

Media from across Saskatchewan were provided with a complimentary 18 holes of golf at the Evergreen Golf Course on Sunday, before they tagged pike at Tobin Lake on Monday.

“We just appreciate all the media coming up to Nipawin and area, and we were pleased to also host you in Carrot River this year,” said promotions coordinator Sherry Hildebaugh.

“Media Day is twofold. It’s about promoting our area, while also giving the opportunity for media that haven’t seen each other for a long time to get together and visit and meet new people. It’s the proximity principle of knowing people and getting to know others within your own chosen career.”

Following the 18 holes of golf Sunday afternoon, media went to the newly renovated Carrot River Inn, which Hildebaugh runs, for a free dinner at Gieni’s restaurant and a complimentary night’s stay.

They were then up early the next morning to go back to Nipawin and head out on the boats in hopes of tagging some big fish.

The event then concluded at the Venice House in Nipawin for a steak supper, which included prizes for everyone, donated by local businesses.

The biggest fish tagged at this year’s event was 106 centimetres long. Forty pike are tagged every year, with 17 businesses sponsoring $1,000 tags.

It only costs $5 to enter the Pike festival, which runs until September 30. It’s a live release event with each tag being worth $100 (from a previous year’s event) up to a $6,000 fishing trip.
