RCMP lay murder charge in death of Sweetgrass man near Cut Knife

A man from Sweetgrass First Nation is facing a charge of first-degree murder following a fatal assault in a rural field east of Cut Knife.

Cut Knife RCMP responded around 2 a.m. on May 31 to a report of a serious assault in a field off Highway 40. Officers located an injured man, who was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

He has been identified as Garnet Whitecalf, 52, of Sweetgrass First Nation. RCMP say his family has been notified and victim services have been offered.

A man was arrested at the scene.

Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes has taken over the investigation. As a result, John Whitecalf, 41, also of Sweetgrass First Nation, is charged with one count of first-degree murder under the Criminal Code.

He appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on June 2.
