Update on future of Historic Post Office in Melfort

Jun 3, 2025 | 1:15 PM

An update on the Historic Post Office in Melfort.

The facility is set to have three flat roofs replaced in the coming months, and the historic building was further discussed at a recent Governance and Priorities Committee meeting.

Director of Community Services Rob Lok told northeastNOW that the tender for the roof repairs is now complete, and a preferred contractor has been identified.

“We are currently working towards establishing a contract with that contractor,” Lok said. “The roofs are expected to be repaired by the end of September.”

The three roofs are just some of the issues facing the over century-old facility.

“There is a long list of repairs and upgrades that could be done from full overhauls of the mechanical and electrical systems, interior refinishing of floors, walls, and ceilings, to the potential re-activation of the [second and third] floor spaces,” Lok explained.

Completing just some of those upgrades would cost an incredible amount of money. However, there is a group of people that are looking at the options for the building going forward.

“The HPO Advocacy Group is a group of Melfort citizens who have expressed interest in taking the lead on the restoration and preservation of the Historic Post Office,” said Lok. The community-led initiative is being spearheaded by Dr. Yemi Laosebikan and other Christmas Castle volunteers who use the facility during the Christmas season.

Lok’s report to the Governance and Priorities Committee said the group presented City Administration with a 10-year Restoration and Preservation Plan for the Historic Post Office. The following month, the HPO Advocacy Group met with members of the Melfort Arts Council and City Council to provide more detail on their 10-year plan.

Lok said the City will work with the HPO Advocacy Group to establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two parties.

“When a draft of the Memorandum of Understanding has been written / agreed upon with the HPO AG, we will take it to Council for confirmation,” he said.

There is no timeline as to when that will take place.
