18U Royals pick up first win of season in dominant weekend in Regina

The bats were blazing this past weekend for the Prince Albert 18U Royals.

P.A. was in Regina for a pair of doubleheaders, four games total, taking on a pair of local teams in the White Sox on Saturday and the Athletics on Sunday.

Entering the weekend after starting the season 0-3, the White Sox added to the early woes by downing the Royals 5-3. P.A. had signs of life in the top of the seventh down 5-2, after Daniel Acorn scored on an Isaiah Parent infield single. But on the very next at bat, the Royals flew out to the shortstop and fell to 0-4 on the campaign. Jaxson Robertson took the loss on the mound after giving up three runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts in three complete innings.

In Game 2 on Saturday, Prince Albert flipped the script and managed to get some early offence by getting two across in the top of the first. The 2-0 lead would last until the bottom of the third when Tylan Stevenson smacked a three-run double to right, putting the White Sox out in front.

After Regina added another in the fourth, the Royals returned the favour and scored three runs of their own in the fifth, and it all started with an error. Declan Borthwick was able to reach first and advance second safely after the left fielder missed the flyout, setting up Ty Semenchuk to hit a double to center to score Borthwick and make it a one-run game.

After Semenchuk stole third and Acorn drew a walk to put two runners on, Carter Krip hit a groundout that scored Semenchuk from third to pull P.A. to even. In the very next at bat, Parent found a hole in the infield and singled to right, scoring Acorn from third to put the Royals out front 5-4.

The Royals would add three more in the seventh courtesy of runs from Borthwick, Semenchuk, and Krip to down the White Sox 8-4, and split the series 1-1.

Owen Tolley-Procyk collected the win in relief, throwing two innings while giving up a walk and collecting a K (strikeout). The starter, Parent, was pulled after the fourth and allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Following Saturday, Prince Albert was back in action a day later on Sunday, looking to continue their winning ways against the Athletics. And win they did.

Game 1 of the second doubleheader began with some hot bats for P.A. as they scored three in the first before recording an out. Borthwick got the party started after reaching first on an error, then scored in the next A-B following a Semenchuk double. Krip then also reached base on an error, allowing Semenchuk to score and Krip to advance all the way to third. Batting fourth, Parent hit a groundout to the shortstop as Krip scored to cap off a fantastic start.

Fast forward to the third, P.A. now leads 8-0 following a one-run double from Carter Martin, a one-run single from Jackson Anderson, a two-run double from Jaxson Robertson, and a one-run single from Borthwick. The Royals tacked on another five runs in the fourth inning with Parent, Acorn, Anderson, Martin, and Tolley-Procyk crossing the plate, as P.A. led 13-0.

The Athletics finally had an answer in the bottom of the fourth when Peytin Ackerman lined a double to center field that scored two runs to begin the comeback for Regina. However, the effort came too little and too late as the game was called following the fifth inning under mercy rule, giving P.A. their second win of the season in a dominant 13-2 fashion.

Tolley-Procyk was back on the mound and threw a complete game, allowing two runs on three hits with one walk and two K’s.

Looking to continue that effort in Game 2, the Royals were hot right out of the gate and hung six runs on the A’s to open the game, highlighted by a Tolley-Procyk two-run double.

Regina answered back though, and equally so, as they also scored six in the first to open the game. The A’s managed to take the lead in the third when Tristan Benyei scored on a walk and Liam Guest scored on a sacrifice fly.

However, the back and forth continued as the Royals managed to pull back even when Semenchuk and Robertson scored on a routine groundball in the top of the fourth, but Regina again retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning and went up by one.

Now in the top of the sixth, Borthwick reached base on an error and managed to reach second when Semenchuk nailed a double to left, allowing Borthwick to score and the Royals to tie. Semenchuk later scored on a throwing error.

After the Athletics tied it 10-10 in the bottom of the sixth, P.A. rallied for half a dozen in the seventh with everyone pitching in to sweep Regina in the weekend series and win their third in a row to improve to 3-4.

Alex Moose pitched a gem in relief for the Royals, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five complete innings. Acorn started on the bump, but was pulled after two innings after allowing eight runs (six earned) on four hits with five walks.

Prince Albert returns to the diamond when they continue their road trip on Wednesday night, travelling to North Battleford to face the Beavers with first pitch at 7 p.m. Following the stop in the Battlefords, the Royals will head back down south for another double-doubleheader weekend.

On Saturday, P.A. will be in Estevan to face the Brewers for a pair of games, before travelling to Balgonie for a Sunday set against the White Butte Broncos.
