The Battlefords United Football Club (BUFC) was in Saskatoon this past weekend for the Aurora Soccer Tournament and had a strong showing with 16 teams competing and several earning hardware in their divisions.

Some of the standout performances included the U13 Boys Division 2 team, who took home a gold medal after a 2-0 victory over Lakewood in the final.

The U19 Boys also had an impressive performance, going undefeated throughout the weekend to claim the top spot in their division to take home gold.

The U15 Boys Division 1 team fought their way to the final but ultimately settled for silver after they fell short in a hard-fought match. Meanwhile, the U17 Girls team delivered a gritty performance throughout the tournament, making it all the way to the semifinals, where they narrowly lost in a heartbreaking shootout.

BUFC Technical Director Kat Huxley said the weekend was a success both on and off the field, despite the challenges brought by wildfire smoke.

“This weekend was great, we did have to be very flexible because of all the smoke. There’s policies around how often we’re allowed to play depending on the smoke index, but our teams were super good at being flexible and jumping in and being prepared for anything,” she said.

The tournament was one of the largest outdoor seasons in Saskatchewan, bringing together teams from across the province. For BUFC, not only was it an opportunity to showcase the strength of the program, but also the dedication and growth of its community.

“It’s wildly impressive how hard our coaches and staff and our players and our families work to continue to improve soccer in the Battlefords area. We have lots of kids that come from inside our city, but also a lot of kids that come from surrounding areas. We love being able to provide opportunities for all kids in all areas,” said Huxley

With the outdoor soccer season now in full swing, the BUFC is getting ready for their next big competition, the Sask. Cup (formerly Provincials) from June 13 to 15 in Saskatoon.
